Winners of The Experimental Cookbook Competition Announced

We’re delighted to announce the 50 winners of The Experimental Cookbook competition, held 2nd August to 30th August 2021.

As part of National Science Week, The Experimental Cookbook competition was an initiative open to children registered with Camp Australia, active schools and Camp Australia team members.

With the National Science Week theme of Food: Different by Design, the competition called for chefs and scientists to get creative in the kitchen. We partnered with dietitians, Julie Meek and Kelly Bramble, who imparted their nutritional advice via a suite of blogs and videos to encourage healthy eating habits within the Camp Australia family. They were also the main judges who selected the 50 winning recipes. We thank Julie and Kelly for imparting their knowledge to us – their practical advice has been inspiring.

How the Competition has Inspired Children in the Kitchen

We asked the parents of our winners how The Experimental Cookbook competition has inspired their children to cook more. Here’s what they had to say:

“My daughter now shows interest in what I'm cooking in the kitchen and helps in meal making. She is making healthy alternatives too.”

“Both of my children enjoy cooking, and this competition started conversations about how we can add or change things in recipes to make them healthier.”

“My daughter has developed a love of cooking and grown in her confidence to be able to cook unassisted.”

“My child loved the idea of putting her cooking skills into action and feature in a cookbook! She put a lot of effort into coming up with a healthy recipe. We considered a few recipes options and discussed how we could replace some of the ingredients for a healthier, more nutritious option. She loved the exercise and it really helped her spark her curiously for healthier ingredients.”

"My son was happy to create a brand new healthy recipe for the competition and kept thinking of which healthy ingredients he could use, which led us to several talks about how real food helps our body to grow healthier and stronger. It's so important that at the age of 7 he understands the value of a healthy diet. For two days in a row now, he spends around 50 minutes by himself in the kitchen making his speciality: fruit salad for the whole family. He's the chef, so he takes care of every step of the process. From choosing which fruit is ripe, to washing, peeling, cutting, mixing and finally serving in individual portions with a dazzle of maple syrup. Yummy!"

A printed copy of The Experimental Cookbook will be sent to each winner and a PDF version emailed to all who entered the competition.

Keep cooking, and stay healthy!
