After school care allows children to remain at school after the bell goes, and continue to receive outstanding care from highly qualified staff.

It’s often provided by external providers like Camp Australia, rather than the school, and isn’t just for children whose parents are at work. Our after school care allows children to enjoy a mix of activities, learn new skills and get their homework underway.

### An overview of after school care
Timing: After school almost always runs from the end of the school day until around 6pm. This gives most parents time to get out of work and pick up their children on the way home - while your children get to socialise with their friends longer, have fun and keep learning.
Location: Many after school care providers operate on the school site. Not only is this practical in terms of getting the children to after school care, it also means they’re likely to be close to home, easy for parents to collect and in a familiar environment.
Age: After school care is generally provided for primary aged children. They are too young to be at home alone - and both benefit from, and enjoy, the activities on offer.

### The terminology - OOSH and OSHC
These two acronyms are often used in association with after school care. They stand for Out of School Hours and Out of School Hours Care. They’re generally interchangeable.

### What happens at after school care?

When lessons finish, children head to the after school care meeting area – either a dedicated area, a hall or a large classroom which can accommodate the whole group. All children are accounted for, and in many cases a snack is offered before activities commence.

At Camp Australia’s after school care, we have all the activities set up and ready to go. Children are given the choice and decide for themselves which they’d like to join in with. None of the children are forced to do any activity - it’s down to them to decide what they’ll enjoy.

We separate our after school care into multiple zones so that children can choose an activity that aligns with their interests or mood. There might be a creative zone, a construction zone, a quiet reading zone or anything in between. Children know what these areas offer and can pick accordingly each day.

Activities might include:

- Painting.
- Reading.
- Sports.
- Cooking.
- Acting.
- Team activities.
- Other arts and crafts.

The exact activities on offer vary across each location, and at Camp Australia, according to the children that attend each club.

Organising for your child to attend after school care
Signing up is easy, although exactly how this works is determined by the provider. At Camp Australia all parents register (registration is free) and manage their child’s attendance via the online Parent Portal. Just select the sessions you want to book in for, and payment is made later in a fortnightly cycle. If you are eligible for the Child Care Subsidy (CCS), you can use it to reduce the cost of our after school care.

How to Decide if After School Care is Right for You

The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) aims to help families pay for [out of school hours child care fees](https://campaustralia.com.au/families/oshc). It is paid directly to outside school hours care providers who pass the discount onto the family by way of a fee reduction.

Coming into effect in July 2018, the CCS replaced the Child Care Benefit (CCB) and the Child Care Rebate (CCR). It is designed to be simpler to manage and better targeted towards low and middle income families who need more assistance.

### What does the Child Care Subsidy cover?
The subsidy helps cover approved childcare for children of 13 years or younger who attend primary school. It does not cover compulsory education, instead being designed to help parents afford out of school hours care and [school holiday programs](https://campaustralia.com.au/families/rocketeers). The CCS is also not applicable for care provided informally by friends and family, and the provider must be approved by the Australian Government Department of Human Services.

As well as age, children must meet certain immunisation requirements, while parents must meet residency requirements. There are some exceptions to these rules - such as when a child is cared for solely by their grandparents, or the child’s safety and wellbeing requires additional support.

### How the Child Care Subsidy is calculated
There are three factors that affect how a family’s entitlement is calculated. They are:

1. Combined family income.
2. Type of approved child care.
3. Activity test.

**Combined family income**
The estimated combined family income is used to determine what percentage of child care costs should be subsidised. Current percentages are:

85% for an income of $68,163 or lower.
50-85% for an income between $68,163 and $173,163.
50% for an income between $173,163 and $252,453.
20-50% for an income between $252,453 and $342,453.
20% for an income between $342,453 and $352,453.
No subsidy is provided for an income of $352,453 or more.
Should actual earnings differ from those estimated, the amount paid out may be adjusted. Families who anticipate earning $352,453 or more can still submit a claim. Should their actual income be less than expected, they’ll receive the amount of subsidy they’re entitled to when the payments are balanced at the end of the financial year.

Additionally, the Department of Human Services withhold 5% of the subsidy to account for adjustments and to ensure families are not overpaid. Any families who do receive more than they are entitled to must pay back whatever they owe. Similarly, any families who receive less than they are entitled to receive a lump sum payment at the end of the year.

There is an annual cap of $10,190 per child for families earning over $186,958 and under $351,248.

**Activity test**
The number of hours of subsidised care a family is entitled to receive is calculated according to the number of hours of recognised activity the parents undertake over a fortnightly period.

Recognised activities are broadly about the minimum hours a parent contributes to the Australian economy through work. However, it’s not just paid work that’s taken into account. Volunteer work may also be covered, as well as time spent commuting, training or studying.

The Department of Human Services looks at both parents, where applicable. They take only the lowest level of activity into account when calculating entitlement.

At present, hours of activity per fortnight equate to the following number of subsidised child care hours per fortnight.

Fewer than 8 hours of activity provides 24 hours of subsidised care for those earning $68,163 or below. Those earning more than $68,163 do not qualify for any subsidised hours.
Between 8 and 16 hours of activity provides 36 hours of subsidised care.
Between 16 and 48 hours of activity provides 72 hours of subsidised care.
More than 48 hours of activity provides 100 hours of subsidised care.
These figures can vary where families receive certain allowances or benefits. Parents who undertake more than one type of approved activity can combine the hours they devote to each.

### How to apply for and claim the Child Care Subsidy
If you think you are eligible to claim the Child Care Subsidy, log into your myGov account and complete a CCS assessment for each child accessing care. Your myGov account must be linked to Centrelink.

As part of the claims process, you’ll be asked a number of questions about your circumstances and you may need to submit supporting paperwork to validate your information. Your child care provider must also confirm your child’s enrolment.

Once you’ve submitted your details, you can track the progress online. If you are unable to submit your claim online, you can also make a claim by phone.

### The Child Care Subsidy for out of school hours care and holiday care
Out of school hours care is a valuable resource both for working parents unable to be there at school drop off and collection times, and for those who want to enrich their child’s daily experiences.

Before and after school care is about much more than providing a space for children to play in while they wait for their parents. It’s about providing an opportunity for them to build new relationships, develop essential soft skills and experience new activities outside of their classroom. We spoke with Manjit to find out about her role as an Outside School Hours Care Educator at Lakeside College in Pakenham, Victoria. Manjit is a passionate educator and is thoroughly enjoying being part of the community at her school.

## Popular interests in Outside School Hours Care

Children have varying interests in Outside School Hours Care. Activities for children range from Lego, building castles with recycled boxes, art and craft, painting, sports, and more. Recently, the children have found their musical passion and have taken up playing musical instruments.

Basketball and soccer are the popular sports this term, and in summer, cricket is the go-to sport. In primary school, children tend to pick up a sport that is played either at a national or community level. Rarely a day goes by when children aren’t dribbling a ball down the basketball court, lining up for that winning goal in soccer or swinging a bat when it’s cricket season! Children also enjoy skipping outside and silent ball when it’s raining.

## Tailoring Activities for Children

Manjit caters for all of the children’s interests in before and after school care. Some activities build on other activities, and this is the beauty of keeping children engaged. Manjit works closely with families and teachers to talk about each child and what interests them. Of course, children also have input into what they can do in each session, allowing them to be creative. For example, using recycled materials to create castles!

Activities are always set up so that children are free to explore, based on their interests. Manjit states, “UNO was played a lot during COVID. I became the UNO expert and children loved winning against me in this game and Connect 4.”

### Getting to Know Children in OSHC

Understanding each child is important to be able to contribute to their growth. “I feel that families are the first place before the children attend.”, explains Manjit. Maintaining contact while children are attending the service is also very important. Manjit also keeps an open dialogue with children – she is always available to the children.

Manjit recalls a time where a child was interested in science and to get to know more about this child, they found a book they could read together. Having conversations with children and building a rapport with them allows educators to understand each individual. Manjit says that children are comfortable in telling her what they are interested in and she loves how all the children like to help the younger children.

### The Importance of Community Involvement

Manjit likes to attend as many school functions as she can, including orientation days, open days, and chapel. Manjit also has her own children attending school at Lakeside College. She said she loved the school when she commenced at Camp Australia and thinks that it is amazing to have your own children at a school you are working at because you are part of a community.

Updates in monthly newsletters are also included for families, giving them insight into upcoming events and what children have been doing in before and after school care.

Last term, Lakeside College supported the National Handball Championships and one of their star handballers was the lucky recipient of a signed Ash Barty top, donated by the great tennis champion herself. Children are to be commended for displaying good sportsmanship throughout the championships.

Service Spotlight: Lakeside College’s Outside School Hours Care Program

We caught up with Etta, our experienced educator who manages our Outside School Hours Care service at Montmorency Primary School in Victoria.

## Activities Children Enjoy in Before and After School Care          

During the school term, there are between 25-50 children attending Outside School Hours Care. Rocketeers is also running during the school holidays and there have been 30 children attend each day during Mission II.

Children love to get involved in all types of activities, including constructive play, building, craft, board games, composting, cooking, discos and outside play (for example, soccer, footy, tennis and having fun on the playground).

Etta makes sure that children enjoy their time in Montmorency Primary School’s service, and each day she ensures that different spaces are set up for children to participate at any time throughout each session. From art and craft, to constructive play that is designed to cater for those who enjoy building of all different sorts.

One of the most frequented spaces is the kitchen play area. There is also a couch for children to relax and unwind after a busy day in school. We can’t forget the table that’s set up for mindfulness activities, such as colouring in and Hama beads.

## Fun Facts about OSHC Activities

Some of the fun facts about Outside School Hours Care at Montmorency Primary School includes the fact that there are always outdoor activities to satisfy the needs of active children. There’s cooking in the kitchen on Wednesdays and Fridays. Pizza is enjoyed on Fridays too! It’s disco fun-time on Thursdays and Fridays.

A daily roster has been set up so that every child has the opportunity to empty the compost bin…children LOVE this responsibility! And…there’s a book that children can write their activity wish list in, which the educators obtain inspiration from.

## Getting to Know the Children at Montmorency Primary School

Etta loves to spend time with the children and enjoys getting to know them. She communicates regularly with them and eagerly waits each week to hear about what they have been up to on the weekend. Etta is often seen joining in the fun when it’s imaginative playtime to gather new ideas and develop her relationship with children. It is important for Etta to know that the children place trust in her.

Here’s what some children have said about their experience in OSHC:

“I like OSHC because it is nice and colourful.”

“I love coming to after school care because I enjoy the food.”

“I like after school care because I get to see my friends and play with them.”

## Getting Involved with the Community

Etta prepares a summary for the school newsletter on a regular basis to keep families updated on what’s been happening in OSHC. Rocketeers posters are also displayed around the school.

We love when families who attend Outside School Hours Care have some knowledge to impart and Montmorency Primary School has been fortunate to have a parent, who is a fireman, come to teach the children during an evacuation drill.

There is a Tai-Chi expert in the local community too, who teaches children all the right moves and mindfulness on Fridays. It will be great when Etta can organise more visitors, as service visits have been minimised during COVID.

## The Importance of Teamwork

Etta ensures that all educators are aware of the needs of children and encourages them to provide feedback and to interact with the activities that children enjoy. The team are looking forward to planning activities around NAIDOC Week and National Science Week in the upcoming months.

## Making Positive Changes with Programs in OSHC
    
Kelly loves developing new programs for the children in Outside School Hours Care. She’s made a positive change to programming initiatives and is grateful that the children appreciate her dedication to guiding their growth. “I feel pure happiness when children thank me for things we’ve done around here.”

Implementing programs that teach children all about emotional and mental wellbeing has enabled Kelly and the team at OSHC to guide children in all areas of kindness and empathy. She wants to ensure that children are able to empathise with their peers and show support for one another. Kelly explains, “Our group games are more than playing. We focus on positive social engagement and being fair to others.”

## Working with Young Children has Provided Professional and Personal Benefits
      
Educators are genuinely special people and Kelly is certainly no different. Kelly has always enjoyed working with young people, primarily those who have experienced trauma. She decided to transition to an Outside School Hours Care setting to enable her to work with families and children. Getting to know the children in before and after school care and their families has been one of the many rewarding aspects of Kelly’s role.

In addition to Kelly’s professional journey, her personal journey is equally important. She truly believes that her role with Camp Australia has helped her to mature and advance in personal ways too. Even her family and friends have commented on how her role suits her!

When interviewing Kelly, she stated, “I never felt I wanted to become a mother, but since working with children at my own service, it has definitely changed my mind.” For now, Kelly is mum to a gorgeous Jack Russell dog, named Jack who is 10 years old!

## Kelly’s Advice for Primary School Children

Quite simply, Kelly’s advice for children is – “Definitely enjoy being a child while you still are! There’s no need to rush. Every adult will tell you that and when you are an adult, you will also give this exact advice!”

Kelly is dedicated to guide children’s growth. The OSHC team teach children key values in each session and Kelly knows that these values will be instilled in them throughout their life. Colleen’s career as an educator spans over 32 years and we are both proud and fortunate to have her as part of the Camp Australia team. Colleen leads a team of educators at Yarrawarrah Public School, dedicated to the 100 children attending before and after school care each week and was once awarded with an Australia Day Award for her work in OSHC.

Initially commencing in the field as a qualified school teacher, took the opportunity to be an Outside School Hours Care Coordinator, and worked with the same service for 18 years, moving to Yarrawarrah Public School over 10 years ago.

On a personal level, Colleen enjoys spending her spare time with her niece and two nephews, along with her Beagle dog.

## Assisting Children to Grow, Learn and have Fun

We wanted to know what Colleen liked most about her role with Camp Australia. Her response clearly demonstrates her passion for what she does: “The most wonderful thing about working in OSHC is watching children grow, learn and have fun. I love working in OSHC. You learn something new every day and continually grow professionally and emotionally.”

Children from kindergarten to Year 6 amaze Colleen each and every day! She makes children feel special and enjoys getting to know all of the children in before and after school care. It’s rewarding teaching children to learn new things.

## Some Memorable Experiences as an Educator
Being an educator is a truly rewarding experience and when the children pop back into the service to visit after their primary school journey, it really does mean a lot to educators.

Colleen will always remember being invited to a wedding of one of the children who use to attend her service. Seeing him as an adult and moving to a new chapter in life was a great privilege for Colleen. 

It makes your heart melt when a child visits the service years later to tell you that she became a teacher because of you…this happened to Colleen, and we’re not surprised as Colleen is a tremendous role model.

## Art and Craft to Brighten Each Day

Art and craft is such an important component of being a child and Colleen always feels special when children proudly present her with their creations - “A special part of being an educator is the beautiful art and craft works that the children proudly give to me which they have created with such care and thoughtfulness.”

Colleen’s Advice for Primary School Children

•	Keep On Smiling! A smile costs nothing but can brighten someone’s day.
•	Respect yourself and others, always consider how others are feeling and believe in yourself.
•	A winner is someone who has the courage to keep trying, never gives up, learns from mistakes and is gracious.  
•	Treasure all the precious moments and all the wonderful things about being a child – play, be kind, try new things, smile and know that   someone always cares about you.  
•	Be grateful for all the big and little things.  
•	Do something kind, help someone and smile at somebody every day.  
•	Say no to bullying!

## Guiding Children’s Growth
We asked Colleen how she guides children’s growth: “I guide children’s growth through respecting every child, being dedicated, caring and genuinely wanting to guide their learning and development.  I always treat each child like I would want my child to be treated by others. I put in a lot of time to ensure every child’s experience at our OSHC service is valuable, fun and memorable. I hope every child treasures their time at OSHC and that maybe I have played an important part in guiding their growth.”

Last term, Colleen remembered when a child hand-picked a flower for her. She treasures these moments as an educator. Colleen states, “I think every child is special and you can learn something new about each child every day. I feel that caring for children is one of the most important and rewarding things you can do in life as you are positively guiding them into their future. I hope every child treasures and happily remembers their time at our service.”

We provide delicious, nutritious breakfast, and tasty afternoon snacks to fuel young minds. We cater to the likes and needs (dietary, religious, and other) of the children in our service, and every menu is different. 

We’re also passionate about cooking, ensuring that, where possible, we try to incorporate at least 2 cooking experiences in our programs every week. 
 

### What will a typical day at Your OSHC look like?
 
A typical day will involve the service Coordinator and their team of educators holding showcase activities to engage the children. This could include a cooking activity where children make vegemite scrolls or apple muffins; a sporting activity where everybody gets together for a game of hockey or soccer; mindfulness activities like yoga and meditation and more. 

If your child wants to do a range of varied activities in one session, we always have our ‘experiences zones’ set up, so they have the choice and the freedom to do as they want. This can be anything from board games, art and craft, construction zone, to outdoor play, performing arts and more.
